About the

RUTHERGLEN CATS FOOTBALL/NETBALL CLUB

The Rutherglen Football Netball Club exists to provide the best possible sporting, community and family environment that fosters participation in football and netball for everyone who wants to play, support and be involved in club membership. We aim for sporting success but also measure our worth through our value to the community.

Club History

The Rutherglen Football/Netball Club has over 100 years of history and was a foundation member of the Ovens & Murray Football League (1893).

The Rutherglen Football Club won 15 premierships in the famous Ovens & Murray League but due to financial pressures a merger of the neighbouring Rutherglen and Corowa Football Clubs occurred before the 1978 season and two new teams formed:

  • the Ovens & Murray team based in Corowa  and
  • a new Rutherglen- based team (the Kangaroos) in the Coreen & District Football League.

The Coreen & District Football League team was very successful at senior level winning premierships in 1984, 1986, & 1990.  The club also won a number of premierships at reserves and junior levels.

At the end of the 1991 season the Corowa Rutherglen Kangaroos were admitted to the stronger Ovens & King Football League. The Kangaroos then became the Rutherglen Cats.  The senior team regularly competed in finals and the junior Cats were always a strong force in the O& K League.

The Rutherglen Cats joined the Tallangatta & District League in 2004 to provide more opportunities for junior footballers and netballers. In the Tallangatta & District Football League we were able to field new under 14 and 17 football teams as well as two new junior netball teams. In 2013 a new under 12 football team and under 12 midget netball team were added to our Club.

The Cats have produced a number of VFL/ AFL players, the most recent being Michael Gayfer (Collingwood) and Rob Campbell (Hawthorn).

Now, with five football teams and six netball teams along with the Felines (Two women’s Football Teams, a Junior and Senior Team) and a strong Auskick Program representing the Rutherglen Cats each week we are a great family club providing high quality sporting and social opportunities to our members, players and supporters.
