Our History
For more than 100 years, the Rutherglen Football & Netball Club has been a proud pillar of the local community. Founded in 1877 as a foundation member of the Ovens & Murray Football League, the club quickly established itself as a force in regional football, securing 15 senior premierships in one of country football’s most respected competitions. Throughout generations, the club has been defined by resilience, community pride, and a commitment to excellence on and off the field.
Adapting, Evolving, and Succeeding
In response to financial pressures, the late 1970s marked a period of significant change with the merger of the Rutherglen and Corowa Football Clubs prior to the 1978 season. This led to the formation of two new teams — one based in Corowa competing in the Ovens & Murray League, and a Rutherglen-based side, the Kangaroos, competing in the Coreen & District Football League. The Kangaroos enjoyed outstanding success, claiming senior premierships in 1984, 1986, and 1990, alongside numerous reserves and junior premierships that reinforced the club’s strong development pathways.
The Rutherglen Cats Era
Following admission to the Ovens & King Football League in 1991, the Kangaroos became the Rutherglen Cats, marking the beginning of a new chapter. In 2004, the club joined the Tallangatta & District Football League to expand opportunities for junior footballers and netballers, steadily growing participation across age groups. Today, the Cats proudly field multiple football and netball teams, including women’s football through the Felines, alongside a thriving Auskick program. With a history of producing VFL and AFL players such as Michael Gayfer and Rob Campbell, the Rutherglen Cats continue to be a strong, family-focused club offering high-quality sporting and social opportunities for players, members, and supporters alike.
